Yoga, Trekking & Ayurveda

TERRA Brazil    |    April 29th to May 8th, 2019

We will spend nine days together supporting a healthy yoga lifestyle to facilitate healing, growth and transformation in the tropical mountains of Brazil. ‘Alto Paraíso’ means high paradise. The setting for our retreat is known for its’ mystical waterfalls, ancient mountains, raw nature, and unique energy. Located on latitude 14, the same as Machu Picchu, this enchanted land is a destination for those on a quest for divine conscious alignment. Meet your highest potential at one of the densest crystal deposits on earth. Practice yoga and meditation among the colorful tropical waterfalls, learn the local traditions of Maracatu, and explore the inner dimensions of your mind with the healing plant medicines of the forests of Brazil!

Transformational Retreat

Where

Alto Paraíso is home to some 40 mystical/ philosophical/ religious communities (Daimists, Oshoists, Hare Krishna, Kardecists, Protestants, Buddhists and others). It is believed that the huge geological layer of quartz crystal underground makes this a region of the Planet that was chosen to receive enlightened beings, creators of the Age of Aquarius, and emanate positive vibrations. The parallel 14, which crosses Machu Picchu in Peru, also does so on Alto Paraíso, more precisely upon the Zen Garden (there is a small monument, full of stones and flowers, on the highway en route to Cavalcante), a beautiful scenery and stage to fantastic stories involving UFOs and ETs. On the road to São Jorge is the impressive Morro da Baleia (Mount Whale), a close second in mystic beauties and mysteries. Within the municipality are several of the best and most beautiful waterfalls in the country, especially in this sense the rivers Preto, São Miguel and Couros, tributaries of the mighty river Tocantins in the Amazon Basin.
The Mariri Lodge was lovingly built by its founder Marianne with the intention to preserve the land of this pristine area using eco-friendly and sustainable practices to create unique accommodation spaces, hold holistic retreats and an artist residency, all set within the ethics and spirit of permaculture. This peaceful place is surrounded by beautiful raw nature, where you have a chance to observe monkeys, exotic birds, go hiking and connect with the spirit of the Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah biome) deeply rejuvenating your body-heart-spirit.

Activities

Yoga

Yoga can be a deeply personal practice, or a fun escape-from-the-grind. Our goal in this Retreat is to find a balance between the two within our classes, offering a practice that is both inclusive AND challenging for the individual, while catering to a variety of levels and backgrounds. Our role is not to instruct per say, but to guide students along a path where they start to make discoveries about themselves (in mind, body, or both), and can begin to feel connected, not only to each other and the greater community, but to themselves. The desire for connection, both inward and outward, is our greatest human need and as yoga teachers we have a very important role in facilitating this. Our retreat is limited to just 15 participants - We want to meet and connect with every single one of you, learning your names, your stories and give you the most transformative 9 days possible in an intimate environment.

Trekking

We will be exploring Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, listed among Unesco Heritage Sites, and offering sensational landscapes, waterfalls, mountain ranges and wildlife. This tailormade retreat itinerary has been designed to take in the key highlights of the Chapada dos Veadeiros at a comfortable level for all participants. We will be hiking at a moderate pace on steep and rocky trails to visit the wonderful waterfalls with clear and fresh waters of the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park. So far we have chosen to take you to Santa Barbara Waterfall, Mirante da Janela (Window View) and Couros Waterfall.

Trekking in Chapada dos Veadeiros

Maracatu

The intoxicating and powerful style of Maracatu Nação (Nation) is also known as Baque Virado [turned beat]. The name ‘Nação’ reflects the African and tribal heritage of the tradition. This strand of Maracatu sets its origins in the time of slavery in Brazil, where slaves and African royalty alike were brought in droves to Brazil to be strewn into the same daily life and oppression regardless of their standing in their home communities. To maintain their native rituals and beliefs, as well as honour the struggles and offer solidarity to one another, a member of the community would be crowned as a ‘Rei do Congo’ [King of Congo] at a coronation ceremony organised by the slaves featuring music, song, and dance. When slavery was abolished in 1888, these Kings of Congo ceased to exist in the same way, but the Nação groups of Pernambuco continue to preserve and promote the traditions of the Maracatu ceremony until the present day.
Maracatu music is driven by percussion instruments called alfaia, tarol, caixa, ganzá, agogô (also knows as gonguê) and zabumba, the sound of which is accompanied by a solo singer. The alfaia and tarol drums emit an unusually deep, heavy and powerful sound, which creates the thunderous beat that is the main characteristic of maracatu music. The sound waves of these drums affect not just the ears of the listener, but the whole body.

Capoeira Angola

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, rhythm and movement. Capoeira is a dialog between players – a conversation through movement which can take on many shades of meaning. The details of capoeira’s origins and early history are still a matter of debate among historians, but it is clear that african slaves played a crucial role in the development of the art form.
Capoeira de Angola refers to every capoeira that keeps the traditions held before the creation of the Regional style.
Existing in many parts of Brazil since colonial times, most notably in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife, it’s impossible to tell where and when Capoeira Angola began taking its present form. The name Angola starts as early as the beginning of slavery in Brazil, when Africans, taken to Luanda to be shipped to the Americas, were called in Brazil “black people from Angola”, regardless of their nationality.

Nature Medicine

Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca is a sacred visionary medicine used for healing and cleaning the mind, body, and spirit by indigenous people in South America for thousands of years. The people who work in the traditions of this medicine believe it can heal by cleaning toxins, both physical and energetic, from the body, and by helping us to align with the spirits of nature and greater cosmic consciousness. Recently scientists have begun conducting studies bringing to light evidence that this medicine can effectively treat depression, trauma, and addiction, as well as helping the body physically by reducing inflammation and improving function in the digestive system. We will have the benefit of working with the most skilled ayahuasca healers in the area, within a safe container, along with our experienced retreat facilitators and yoga instructors who will help us integrate our connection and experience with the medicine through guided sharing circles throughout the retreat. In our experience, this medicine brings the benefit by clearing away the blockages that separate us from our own divine insight and healing power. The experience can vary greatly from one person to another, just as our own issues and challenges vary from one to the other. We feel that this medicine, in combination with the healthy vegan food, intimacy with nature, hiking, yoga, and meditation will help us access our full potential for lasting growth and transformation.

Kambo

Kambo is a medicine that comes from frog secretion, and for many indigenous cultures in the Amazon, this purgative, immunity-boosting medicine is very important. Known in Portuguese as the “vaccine of the forest,” it has also gained renown outside of the Amazon as a powerful treatment for chronic pain and drug dependence. Kambo is powerful medicine and it will be administered under the care of an experienced practitioner to support a positive experience. Many people experience a powerful cleansing of negative energies, decrease their physical pain, and treat a wide variety of physical and psychospiritual ailments. To learn more about the benefits of kambo, visit the International Association of Kambo Practitioners’ website. While there are no clinical studies that definitely back up kambo’s efficacy, the properties of kambo peptides make it a promising treatment for the following conditions: Depression, Migraines, Blood circulation problems, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, Vascular insufficiency, Organ diseases, Cancer, Fertility problems, Deeply rooted toxins, Chronic pain, Addiction to opiate or prescription painkillers (Kambo reduces physical pain, thus helping people kick their addictions to other painkillers), Fever and infections, Negative energies (traditionally known as “panema”) and others
